The Ugandan Daughter of Ghanaian Parents: An Authentically African Philanthropy Story

Hosting Sharon for breakfast in Nairobi, Kenya in August 2019
For several years, since 2009, the Perbi family adopted the nine-year old orphaned Sharon Anena through the vital ministry of the Watoto Children’s Village in Uganda.

When in 2012 Dr. Yaw Perbi honoured an invitation to speak at the Omega Church in Kampala, he made the time to travel outside the capital all the way to the Village where their daughter Sharon was domiciled. It was a wonderful first-time in-person celebration.

Eventually when the monthly financial support to Watoto had gotten her through to the end of her secondary education, the ministry indicated to the Perbi family that per their policy Sharon’s support was ending since they did not support their wards up to the tertiary level. That did not sit well with the family of higher education scholars of four generations; besides, they wondered, what kinds of occupations would the young lady qualify for? With an imminent future of limited opportunity in view, the Perbis elected to stop supporting Watoto and direct their budget directly to supporting Sharon through her tertiary education.
Dr. Yaw Perbi and his Ugandan daughter Sharon
When another speaking engagement at Christ Is The Answer Ministries (CITAM) this time landed Dr. Yaw Perbi in Nairobi, Kenya Sharon moved heaven and earth to see her dad again, travelling by road all the way from Kampala to Nairobi. That was August 2019. What a powerful reunion it was, this time with a young lady of a daughter who had not only graduated college with a diploma in social work but was an entrepreneur in her own right, running a construction and pest eradication service. She has since dug her entrepreneurial heels even deeper, into industrialization of okra-based beauty and cosmetic products.

The Perbi Family and Sharon are still in touch from time to time and recently encouraged her to share her deeply touching story, in her own words. Be encouraged.

Here it is.
